After leaving the United States Marine Corps and joining GardaWorld Federal Services eight years ago as a canine handler, Andrew Sanchez has come full circle; he now works on GardaWorld Federal Services’ Department of Defense projects. 

In 2012, I left the Marines and started working with GardaWorld Federal Services as an explosive detection canine handler. The move to GardaWorld Federal Services seemed like a natural transition from the Marine Corps, as I had experience in the military working as a dog handler. After six months, I was promoted to be a K9 trainer, absorbing everything I could about the business. I was eventually promoted to kennel master, overseeing kennel management and trainings at locations across Afghanistan. 

Full circle: From the marines to supporting Department of Defense projects 

Now, I am taking on new challenges working at GardaWorld Federal Services’ headquarters in McLean, Virginia, supporting Department of Defense operations. Helping to win the opportunity to support my brothers at the United States Marine Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC) is one of my biggest success stories. 

The advantage of being a “force multiplier” 

I attribute my success at GardaWorld Federal Services to my drive and attitude. Setting goals is the first step but having the drive to achieve them is crucial. In addition, I understand the importance of boosting morale for everyone throughout the process during critical missions. I have that so-called “fire from within” that motivates me to persevere through any challenge. 

My advice to anyone early in their career at GardaWorld Federal Services is to know your strengths, develop your skills, be mindful of your surroundings and work hard. Make yourself an indispensable resource that the company cannot go on without. In addition, strive to be a force multiplier—someone who brings out the best in everyone you meet. That is something that will be noticed and will identify you to higher ups as a strong manager.
